Piatra Craiului Mountains are one of the main points of attraction in the area of the Zarnesti city .
Although not reach the height of the Fagaras Mountains or masivity of Bucegi, Piatra Craiului however,
with the composition entirely from limestone, elegant ridges, with dantelas of mine worked like a jeweler,
monumentality rocky vertical walls , everything seems to be putted in value by a jeweler, by many forests
at the foot of its ridges, represents for the nature lovers natural beauties, a superlativ domain. The variety
and diversity of the rocky walls and limestone, enjoy the same kind of a flora and fauna on a measure.
Located in SE of the Meridionals Carpathians with an elevation that remains on the crest at about 2,000 m,
with the most high altitude in Vf. La Om (Piscul Baciului) 2238 m, Piatra Craiului massif rises it thin ridge
high and long about 25 Km, neighbours Bucegi mountains, Fagaras, Iezer-Papusa, Leaota. It is situated
in the radius of Brasov and Arges counties, and villages of Zarnesti, Bran, Moeciu, Rucar, Dambovicioara,
Cave, Magura, Satic, Sirnea. Piatra Craiului became a natural reserve in the year 28 March 1938
(Official Council of Ministers no. 645). In the year 1938, when it was founded Natural Reserve with the limits
of 440 hectares. In 1972, this area has increased to 900 hectares, and today, special conservation area
covers a large area of 4879ha, the national park has 9894 ha.
In 1990 Piatra Craiului is declared National Park by Order 7 of the Ministry of Agriculture, along with
12 other parks in Romania.
On 24 May 2007, Piatra Craiului National Park has received the European Award for Protected Areas.
Distinction offered by Council of Europe, place the park under the patronage of the institution.
Piatra Craiului fauna is a very wild one, here still live bears, wolves, links or black goats .
Flora is thery diversified and contains many species protected by law. Among these would be: corner flower
or blood of the warrior.
One of jewelry mountain Piatra Craiului is Garofita Pietrii Craiului, flower that grows only in this mountain
and is a unique natural monument protected by law!
Tourist routes through the mountains are classified by different types and difficulties. There are routes to climb
up to low altitudes and that can be done both summer and winter, and there are more difficult routes for tourists
with good physical condition and have the properly equipment and that can be done only on good weather!
In Piatra Craiului mountains there are possibilities of accommodation in alpine chalets and refugees made
freely available to tourists in case of bad weather.
We inform you that ridge routes in the mountains of Piatra Craiului are prohibited during the winter and if you
still try to make a through one's own risk.
